The Science

What is Ilm ul Nahw?

Ilm ul Nahw (Arabic grammar) is the science of Arabic word formation — how the same three root letters (asl) combine with different patterns (awzan) to produce hundreds of different words with different meanings. It is the first of the two core Arabic language sciences, taught before Nahw (grammar) in the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum.

The root letters ك-ت-ب (K-T-B) produce: kataba (he wrote), kitaab (book), kaatib (writer), maktaba (library), maktub (written/letter), kitaabat (writing). Once a student knows the awzan system, they can recognise any Arabic word's root and derive its meaning — even if they have never seen the word before. This is the power of Sarf.

The online Sarf course at Kanzulilm covers all major awzan through the classical texts used in the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum — Ilm ul Sarf, Hidayat-un-Nahw, and Kafiyah & Alfiyah — entirely via 1-on-1 WhatsApp sessions with certified scholars.

EXAMPLE: I'RAB — HOW CASE ENDINGS CHANGE MEANING

Arabic SentenceI'rabMeaning
ضَرَبَ زَيْدٌ عَمْرًاZayd = subject (Raf')Zayd hit Amr
ضَرَبَ زَيدًا عَمْرٌAmr = subject (Raf')Amr hit Zayd
جَاءَ زَيْدٌZayd = subject (Raf')Zayd came
رَأَيْتُ زَيدًاZayd = object (Nasb)I saw Zayd
مَرَرْتُ بِزَيْدِZayd = genitive (Jarr)I passed by Zayd

The same name — three different endings. Nahw teaches you to read these endings correctly, which completely changes the sentence meaning. This is I'rab — the core of Arabic grammar.

What You Will Study

Complete Nahw Course Syllabus.

Mubtada & Khabar

The subject (Mubtada) and predicate (Khabar) of nominal sentences — the most fundamental grammatical relationship in Arabic. Students learn the rules governing agreement, definiteness, and I'rab of subject-predicate pairs throughout the Quran and Hadith.

Arabic Sentence Structure

Jumlah Ismiyyah (nominal sentence) and Jumlah Fi'liyyah (verbal sentence) — the two fundamental Arabic sentence types. Students learn to identify and construct both types and understand their grammatical relationships in any classical Arabic text.

Parts of Speech (Kalimah)

Ism (noun), Fi'l (verb), and Harf (particle) — the three parts of Arabic speech. Students learn to classify every word in any Arabic sentence, a prerequisite to applying I'rab correctly and understanding classical texts.

Fa'il, Maf'ul & Idhafah

The subject of a verb (Fa'il), the object (Maf'ul bih), and the genitive construct (Idhafah — e.g. "Kitab Allah" = Book of Allah). These three relationships govern the majority of Quranic Arabic structures and are studied extensively with examples from the Quran.

Hidayat-un-Nahw

The classical intermediate Sarf text of the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum. Hidayat-un-Nahw systematically covers the complete Arabic morphological system with its awzan, derivative forms, and exceptions — the standard second text after introductory Ilm ul Sarf.

Kafiyah & Alfiyah

The advanced Sarf text in the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum covering hamzated, doubled, and weak (Mu'tal) verb forms — the most complex area of Arabic morphology. Students who complete Kafiyah & Alfiyah can handle every morphological structure in the Quran and classical Arabic texts.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions.

Ilm ul Nahw (Arabic grammar) is the science of Arabic word formation — how root letters combine with verb patterns (awzan) to produce different words. It is the first foundational science of classical Arabic in the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum. Without Sarf, reading unvowelled Arabic — the Quran, Hadith, classical Islamic texts — is impossible. Once mastered, a student can recognise and derive the meaning of any Arabic word from its root and pattern.

The Quran is written in unvowelled Arabic in most printed editions. Sarf gives the reader the ability to recognise any word's root and pattern — and therefore its meaning and grammatical function — even without vowel marks. Without Sarf, a student must memorise individual words. With Sarf, they can derive the meaning of thousands of Arabic words from a few hundred root letters and patterns.

The classical Dars-e-Nizami Sarf texts: Ilm ul Sarf (introductory), Hidayat-un-Nahw (intermediate — the standard Sarf text), and Kafiyah & Alfiyah (advanced — covering weak, hamzated, and doubled verbs). The starting text is determined in the free trial based on the student's current Arabic knowledge.

Yes. Kanzulilm offers complete online Sarf classes for students in the United Kingdom (London, Birmingham, Manchester), United States (New York, Houston, Chicago), Canada (Toronto), Australia (Sydney), and worldwide. All sessions are 1-on-1 live via WhatsApp with flexible scheduling around Western time zones.

Sarf (morphology) studies individual Arabic words — how root letters combine into verb patterns, noun forms, and derivations. Nahw (grammar) studies Arabic sentences — how words relate to each other with case endings (I'rab). Sarf comes first: you must understand what a word is before you can understand how it functions in a sentence. They are studied together in the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum.

Introductory Ilm ul Sarf in 3–6 months of weekly sessions. Hidayat-un-Nahw takes a further 4–8 months. The complete curriculum through Kafiyah & Alfiyah takes 12–18 months. Our scholar sets a personalised timeline in the free trial based on each student's existing level and session frequency.

Yes — Sarf is the first subject of the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum. Students enrolled in the online Alim or Alimah programme at Kanzulilm study Sarf as an integrated part of that programme. Students who want to study Sarf online independently before enrolling in Dars-e-Nizami are also welcome.
